Modern paperback books began in 1939 with the issuance of 10 titles by Pocket Books, each with a limited test run of around 10,000 copies. These were released only within New York City, but were so successful that it started a flood of similar releases worldwide.

In the early 1940's, paperback books came into vogue, spearheaded by Englishman Ian Ballantine. He founded Bantam, later Ballantine, and things in the publishing business have never been the same. Other publishers copied the success of Ballantine, and today, paperback books greatly outnumber hardcovers.

Paperback books have grown into a multimillion business as printing costs and other factors have driven hardcover books higher and higher. Perhaps the future of the business belongs to the paperback, as more and more books are published only in paperback form.

Below are listed the PAPERBACK BOOKS I currently have in stock. If you decide to place an order, be sure to read my ordering instructions before placing your order, as well as my comments about collecting Science Fiction.

WARNING

Vintage paperback books will be offensive to many people today. They were issued before the current climate of political correctness overtook the country. Themes of many books (or at least the covers) are racially insensitive, show violence to women, unsafe and/or promiscuous sex, and negative stereotyping of gays, lesbians, Asians, and almost any group you can imagine. Fantastic Collectibles in no way endorses these attitudes. However, these books are a historical fact, and many people study them for one reason or another. This is their right in a free country, and if you find them personally offensive, you need only leave this page. For a more thorough discussion of these books, and some nice examples of cover art, see Tawdry Town .

Some of the books in my listings are marked adult. In some cases, this may be a true description of the contents based on current standards. In other cases, you will find that they contain less explicit scenes and language than may be found on any episode of Melrose Place or Beverly Hills 90210. (I don't let my small children view either of these shows by the way). I cannot read each book, so if they were ever marked as adult, I have carried forward that marking in this listing. If you are looking for hardcore pornography, do not order these books as you will probably be disappointed. Also do not order if you are under 18, or if these books may be illegal in your jurisdiction. You must state (and sign) that you are 18 or older to purchase anything marked as adult.
