In the process of building my collection over the years, I have accumulated
a large number of duplicates. This results from my policy of buying complete
collections, and sorting out exactly what I need at my leisure.
These duplicates currently fill an entire basement and the 3
car garage of my home. So that I may make room for more of my collection, I
must sell some of these extras.
You may wonder why my prices are so cheap relative to others you may have
seen for used books and magazines. Where else have you seen large lists of
SF paperback books selling at around US$1.50 each? The reasons are simple. I have
no store to pay rent on. I have no employees - just myself and my wife. And I have a
full time job as a rocket
scientist (no kidding) to put food on the table, so I don't have to charge enough
to live off my books. The truth is, I don't want to make any money, I just
love books!
Many of you will not find it convenient to buy my extra books, and for this I
apologize in advance. I can't easily take credit cards. The man from the bank came
and looked at all my books but went away when I couldn't present a business plan,
mission statement, organizational structure, and all the other things he was
expecting for a business. So you will have to send a check or money order with
your order. This presents a real problem for those of you from outside the
USA. Since I travel frequently on business to England, France, Sweden, and
Australia, I can accept currency (by registered mail only) from these countries,
but anyone else will have to send a check or bank draft in US Dollars.
But the bigger problem with credit cards is that I would have to install an automated inventory system
to be able to accept cards. The reason for this is that the credit card people charge excessively if you refund
a portion of the sale because an item is out of stock. I checked out over a dozen inventory systems and
found it would add about 75 cents to the cost of every item, including barcoding and other features. Since
I sell many items for a dollar or less, and each item is usually unique, it just doesn't make economic sense
to operate in other than old fashioned ways.
I also don't talk on the phone, (at least not without great difficulty)
because of a severe hearing problem. This means you can't call and check to see if
some item is already sold. If you did call, the chances of me understanding
the exact title you were interested in is somewhat problematical, so your best
bet is to just order by snail mail like everyone else. I usually only sell
around 5% of the books from any list in the several months a list is active,
so this is not really the problem it would appear.
As I indicated before, I am always purchasing full collections of Science
Fiction and Fantasy books and magazines. While I mostly need earlier stuff,
I will buy collections containing more recent material if there are some
earlier items.
